Bring your computer in and have it checked. There’s a good chance that you are dealing with clogged cooling fans.  Do NOT try to clean the fans on your own.  I will also check to see if there’s something else such as viruses or other malware installed.

Laptop computers use cooling fans to keep from overheating.  Using your laptop on blankets or soft other materials (which block the fan from releasing the hot air) will make the computer slow things down to prevent overheating.

 

Always use your laptop on a hard surface where hair, fur and other fibers cannot block the exhaust fan.  If you’re still having issues, bring your laptop in and have it checked for clogged cooling fans.

 

You also might consider investing in a cooling pad for your laptop.

Bring your new computer in for a complete reformatting.  Do NOT trust the software currently installed.  You do not know what the previous owner installed and whether it is safe or not.

I really don’t keep parts inventory on hand.  I generally order parts as my customers need them.  This helps keep my overall services less expensive for you.  I can recommend a few retailers if you really need that part TODAY.

I don’t work on mobile devices but I can look at your laptop screen and MAY be able order then install a replacement for you.

Bring it in and I’ll take a look.  Please be honest about what all happened and what all you attempted to do, even if it’s embarrassing to do so.  Honesty will enable faster diagnoses, faster repairs, and less money spent on your part.

I can offer some basic data recovery services but I cannot offer anything extensive or specialized.  For those kinds of service, you will need to send your drive out to a specialized service.

If your computer will still recognize the drive as being attached (even only sometimes), I can sometimes recover data from the drive.

 

Remember that data recovery is not a guarantee. I may not be able to recover all your data. If the data is corrupted, there’s nothing I can do to uncorrupt it.

 

If your computer will not recognize the drive as being plugged in at all, then there’s nothing I can do for you. You will need to send your drive to a company specializing in data recovery.

It depends on what I have to do. For simple things, I won’t have to backup your data. For more complex things, I might do so depending upon what I need to do to fix the problem.

 

For best results, I recommend that you backup your own data before I attempt any repairs. This way you can be assured that all your important data is backed up.

 

I may not know where all your data is backed up. I can grab things from the Documents, Music, Photos/Images folders and other common locations but I won’t know about any custom or specialty data locations on your computer.

The first thing to check is whether or not this is a legitimate message from your computer or a scammer. This is easy to do and could save you both money and headache.

 

Are you currently using an internet browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc.)? If so, try minimizing the browser and see if the message goes away and reappears when you bring the browser back up. If so, your computer probably doesn’t have a virus. The “alert” is probably an ad purchased by a scammer to try and fool you. You can probably ignore it and be just fine.

 

If the message does not go away when the browser is minimized, then you might have a legitimate problem. Bring your computer in for me to check it out. Do not close the message because I will need to see it for myself. If you must turn off your computer for transport, please screenshot or take a picture of the error message with your smart phone so I can see the error message.

 

If you are unsure whether or not you are dealing with a scammer or a legitimate virus alert, please bring it in. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Just like strange noises in your car, strange noises in your computer could be a lot of different things.

 

To properly diagnose what is wrong I need to know more about the noise. Describe what the noise sounds like and when it starts making the noise and if/when when it stops making the noise.

 

Alternatively, you could make a video with the computer making the noise or bring your computer in and we can listen to the noise together and I can diagnose the issue then.
